Grote Kerk Alkmaar — Birdcage by David Claerbout

David Claerbout

Site-specific projection installation in the Grote Kerk Alkmaar — long-throw lensing, blackout and surround audio in a sensitive heritage space.

A medieval church is a beautiful place to show work and a difficult one to project in: enormous volumes, daylight through stained glass, stone that does unpredictable things to sound, and a building you are not allowed to touch. David Claerbout’s “Birdcage” had to inhabit that space without altering it.

We solved the throw with long-lens projection from a discreet position, built reversible blackout to tame the daylight, and designed a surround audio field that worked with the church’s acoustics instead of against them. Everything was free-standing and fully reversible — the building was handed back exactly as we found it.
